This place genuinely had the best staff that I've ever encountered. Extraordinary. The food was really interesting, fabulous and well presented. The venue was cute too even if there were no soft furnishings or curtains to be seen which made it quite a loud and harsh environment for the ears. Which is a shame because it reduced the potentially intimate setting to that of a cafe. read more.

"An amazing boardgame cafe/restaurant. Been there a couple of times (once on a double date and the second time with my boardgame savvy 4 yo). A lot of boardgames, nice selection. We enjoyed the chicken burger but the venison burger was quite dry. I can see us returning many times in the future."

"Edit: It seems Hiakai has shut their doors as their last season finished April 1 (as per website) and no new bookings have been released. Pretty good! Awesome tasty food and service, had the wine match and that was great too. The only thing that could be a little different for that price is maybe some more experimental items instead of just a cake as the dessert. I know from photos old-style Hiakai used to be experimental but seems to have lost it's touch recently."

"Closest thing to authentic Mexican food you will get in Welly (for now??? . The owners are from Ensenada, Mexico instead of the faraway lands of Whakatane or Timaru. Definitely leans towards food on the northern side border food, but the soups especially are very good and flavoursome. Also the dudes pop the cap off your jarritos with a lighter from their pocket, so it's true authentic."
