I travelled to Thunder Bay on business and hear often that Hoito is famous there! I went for a late lunch on Monday June 26.

I understand where all the positive reviews are coming from and I agree, there's no doubt that the pancakes served here are unique and one-of-a-kind.

I really enjoyed the experience! three of us have risen in the early Sunday morning to be there at 8 o'clock to prevent us from being in line. the waitress was good, pleasant and busy! our eating was great and half the amount of speech Finnish. the handicap lift has made everyone welcome. breakfast tomorrow!

Put on your eating pants! It's breakfast time at the Hoito. A longstanding Thunder Bay (okay, Port Arthur/Bay Street) tradition, breakfast at the Hoito is a must do for visitors to the city. It's not that it's so fancy, or that you will be wowed by the service, but it's that the food is great and you get to experience a bit of Thunder Bay history. From the "Finnish" pancakes, to the mojakka (soup), to clabbered milk (a kefir-style drink), the menu draws a line from the Finnish and Scandinavian workers that immigrated to Thunder Bay in the early 20th c., to the well established Finnish, Swedish and Danish communities that make up a sizeable part of the city's population today. It's a nice weekday activity in the morning, but if you go on the weekend be prepared to queue for a little bit (also be aware that it is a seat yourself place, so you need to manage without a hostess). Be sure and weigh yourself on the provided scale at the entrance... you can weigh yourself when you leave, but I wouldn't recommend it!
