Was Isaac Reséndez at Simply Spanish a mag?
We love visiting the South Melbourne markets when we are in Melbourne and this time we had a recommendation to eat at Simply Spanish. We were not disappointed. The Paella was wonderful. Being foodies we asked many questions on the making of various dishes and the chefs were only too happy to share their culinary secrets. The wait staff were attentive and helpful without being pushy. What Helen Stevens dislikes about Simply Spanish:
My boyfriend and I came here for brunch, and he had the regular paella, while I had the mushroom and spinach paella. His was tasty, and cost about $14, whereas mine was bland and pretty flavourless at around $20. It is great to have a vegetarian paella option, but it would have been much nicer if it was closer to the original but with alternatives to the meat.Mine was rather like a bland risotto, whereas my boyfriend... They say its the best paella outside of Spain but beg to differ. It was good but I've had better. The sangria was really good and cheap too. The service was good but we didn't get asked if we want another drink or more food etc...l want to return and try out some tapas dishes

The staff were nice and I recommend trying the standard paella if you fancy it, but don't bother with the more expensive, bland vegetarian menu option.

Wanted to try their seafood paella. They only serve it to 2 people, not solo diners. What a great business idea - not.

Always be wary of signs saying the ‘best whatever’, it can be misleading. We have Spanish friends who make a fantastic paella and I think they do a better job. Having said that, when you are cooking for 100s of people, it is not as easy.We visited on a Sunday lunchtime and the restaurant was packed. We had a short wait and watched the huge dishes being prepared and the many people enjoying the food. Our group all had the paella and it was good. Was it the best; can’t say, it was the only one we tried on this trip to Melbourne. On the day, we enjoyed it, the atmosphere was good and the buzz around made it memorable. It was also helped by a pretty amazing Sangria. Would we go there again; I think so. The staff were extremely busy and coped well with the many diners.
