"Renowned for its vertiginous landscape and breathtaking views the lake district has always been a firm favourite for the outdoor type. But in recent times Cumbria has quietly built a reputation as a first class foodie destination boasting the most Michelin star restaurants in a county outside London. We were keen to try the ambitious 1863 in Pooley Bridge proudly named after the date it was built. The modern version was welcoming and well furnished with plenty of interesting memorabilia to browse between courses. The 7 course tasting menu started with the regular amuse bouche, tasty but not stunning and there was a suprise glass of bubbles with the wine pairing. The opening venison tartare was splendid, packed in flavour with a welcome hazelnut texture contrast. All courses were excellent but the star of the show was undoubtedly the Creedy Carver duck, perfectly cooked, well seasoned, a crispy skin and accompanied with duck leg wrapped in savoy cabbage and pumpkin seeds. The wine pairings were well matched although the Rioja Blanco, with the halibut; was perhaps slightly over woody for my pallet. If there was one criticism the sommelier needs some work, particularly if there is ambition to join the Cumbrian elite with a star. The closing expresso was weak and my Balvenie 12 was wrecklessly delivered with a lump of ice but overall an enjoyable fine dining experience and well recommended."

"The bride here the surprise post wedding party. We had the vegetarian options (each other one at the table had meat or fish and polished the plates clean), I was skeptical in the first place of the Beetroot ravioli on the menu, was Italian itself and had many disappointing pasta dishes in pubs before. That was great. Made from scratches and cooked to perfection! The cauliflower steak and the vegetables that came with him were also so beautiful! The dessert (sticky toffee pudding and chocolate brownie) were also top quality. Peter and the staff were so courteous and even made our daughter part of the apple kick outside the menu option! Thank you for choosing a good REMBER!"

"10 minutes before booking displayed on our table. lady in responsibility said she was over once she had taken another order: she was not. then she made a whole series of. other jobs for the next 25 minutes so we could wait. Finally, I had to go to the reception and ask if our order could be taken. her answer “I just came”. I pointed out that we waited for 25 minutes. no excuse. Instead, she told me we had arrived before our booking! I reminded her that she said that she would come as soon as she had taken another order, her answer was: "I try to make it easier for the chefs to take the commands out of distance". this was despite the fact that only eight other people were sitting only four of them had taken their orders; all others had menus waiting for their commands. none of them has created a very bad initial impression on a good footpath. so much so that I decided not to spend £21 on sea bass, but get suppe £7.50) instead. the food came within 25 minutes, ironically less time than it needed to take the order. my suppe was moderately 5/10). the sea bass of my sohnes mum was delicious 7/10. daughter pizza fine 6/10). since eating only average service was bad, I would not recommend will not return."

"We have not visited for a few months, despite the pub on our doorstep, due to a decline of the atmosphere and service under the new property, but decided to give it an attempt for Sunday lunch. there was a massive improvement. there is a...better selection of bierales that eat (especially sunnay roast) was excellent and the place is much fuller and has a nice bush again. my only grip was the slow service. we sat up and had to wait a while for drinks. it is worth it now!"
