Contribute FeedbackLocated in Coolum with breathtaking views of the beach, this restaurant has received mixed reviews from patrons. While some have praised the great prices and awesome food on their first visit, subsequent experiences have shown a decline in quality and long wait times. Complaints range from changing cuts of meat without notice to poorly trained staff and incorrect food orders. However, there have also been positive reviews mentioning friendly staff, delicious meals like the ploughman's platter and breakfast options, as well as fresh juices and organic ingredients. Despite some hiccups, the restaurant seems to have potential for a pleasant dining experience.
I found the experience at Canteen disappointing from the moment we set foot in the place: attitude of waitress - no welcome or smile, no good vegetarian item on the menu, food not served correctly or with good attitude, quality of food poor - the 'green side salad' I ordered only had a mass of rocket with some sliced parmesan - no lettuce, or dressing. Again, it is most frustrating when poorly-trained waitresses remove plates on the table whilst others on that table are still eating - it is such a no-no - it might be a habit in the RSL, etc., but it should not happen in a so called 'quality restaurant' - would not return from choice.
Canteen was recommended by the manager of the Coolum resort, where I was staying so we arrived for breakfast on a Saturday morning thinking we were in for a treat. Unfortunately, it could've been great, but it let itself down in some simple ways. The coffee was excellent, but the wait - 25 minutes - for two long blacks is unacceptable. When we got tired of waiting, my son went to the counter to ask about the progress of our coffee and found cups lined up awaiting delivery to the tables. The wait staff were clearly under pressure, but were doing their best and were as attentive as they could be in the circumstances. My son had the large breakfast, which at $24 you would expect to be very good. The poached eggs were sensational, but the tomatoes and mushrooms were cold. My scrambled eggs were really delicious, but the sides (again those tomatoes and mushrooms) were lukewarm. We were kept company by the local water dragon (very cute) and the sound of the waves crashing on the beach opposite.
My first visit here in January and I thought it was great, locals menu was great price and food was awesome. But every visit since then it has gone down hill. The worst part is the crazy long wait, even for coffees. On one visit I ordered the eye fillet, as per the menu, only to be told once the meal was sitting in front of me that the cut of meat had changed, looked and tasted like budget cuts. Went for Mother's Day brunch today and people were walking out, cancelling their food orders due to the wait times. We had to remind the staff of our coffee and juice orders and then finally enquired about when we could expect our meals, over 50 minutes after we ordered we were told they were being plated now... another ten minute wait followed. Shame as the premises are lovely and food is generally good. Toilets are atrocious.
Everything was great, but starting with a local beer and home made pork crackling was the perfect combination. Followed with the seafood marinara. Devine. Third visit now. Friendly chatty staff!!!
