Tavern & Grocery - Charlottesville

I had a great experience at this restaurant a year ago, but unfortunately, the service and quality have declined since then. Normally I would try to add some humor to this review, but I can't even do that this time. For a restaurant that prides itself on fine dining, the service was lacking. My water went unfilled for 30 minutes until I had to flag down the waiter. I had to keep asking for new drinks, and the waitstaff seemed more interested in chatting with each other than attending to the customers. The food was okay, but there were several issues. The bison steak I ordered was supposed to be 10 oz but was only 5 or 6 oz. The steak was also overcooked, and the risotto portion was ridiculously small for the price. One order of risotto was undercooked and the duck breast was served nearly raw, which is a health risk. To top it off, my grandmother's complaint about her duck being raw was laughed at by the waitstaff. Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant at this time.

The food is wonderful, but the friendly staff is what makes this place such a joy. Even when they are shorted staffed (and who isn't these days), this is a team of seasoned professionals who enjoy what they do and work together to make sure their guests have a great experience.
