"Every time I visit Serpa, I come to Molhó Bico. This charismatic restaurant in Sepra, well known all over Portugal is a must-visit when nearby Serpa, or in the Alentejo region. Molho Bico serves al range guests in the local traditional southern Portuguese atmosphere. You will be greeted by experienced waiters who know what are doing. Take some time to look around as you will find plenty of typical regional decorations in many forms, in several places. To start with, big wine barrels that were used one day to make the delicious Alentejo red wine. You will also find some kitchen tools made from cork (Southern Portugal is known for being the world’s biggest cork exporter) and typical local tapestry. At the same time, you will also see some other very old rural equipment that was once used by farmers in the deep lands of Alentejo. Check all the different artwork hanging on the wall since you will meet and learn some more about the village and some local traditions. Close to the lavatories, you should pay attention to the small stand with the local specialties and a small artisan exhibition. Molho Bico is one of the most renowned restaurants in the whole region, and they are known by cooking some of the best local dishes. Tourists travel hundreds of miles to visit the restaurant, and locals visit the place whenever they can. You will enjoy local dishes just like I did. I tried this time their famous Migas com Carne de Porco. A bread paste with pork – in South Portugal you can find very good bread. This very same bread is used for this dish. This comes from centuries ago when there was not much to eat. Nowadays there is no shortage of food, but the locals love their old receipts, passed on from generations to generations. A good small jar of red wine (ask for the house wine – it comes from a local wine producer) because it is quite accessible and splendid. Immerse yourself in the various desserts. Get up from the table and go see the fridges where all the desserts are located. I strongly suggest you ask for the so-called “Pijama” which in this context means a plate filled with some (good size) samples of all the desserts. A must try if you want to taste all the tasty sweets and delicacies this region has to offer. If you get lucky, you might witness in first hand some locals singing the local (now elevated to UNESCO Humanity Heritage) men choir singing. When a group of locals meets and if the conditions are favorable, then very likely you might hear a whole table singing along in a unison choir, which can be quite an experience. Usually, these songs are about the rural worker's experiences in their landfills, stories about beloved ones or simple singing about the weather and the local religious patrons. Let me remind you that Serpa is the capital of the “Cante Alentejano” (the Alentejo’s man choir singing) and it had a very important role elevating this tradition to UNESCO’s intangible world heritage. Expect a good price nevertheless, and most important, a good experience in the deep region of Alentejo."
