"Lunchtime visit to El Picaro last Friday. We had booked I doubt whether we would have got a table if we’d just turned up. It’s always a good sign when the place is full of local families. Quite a noisy, vibrant atmosphere with a €12 lunchtime menu including local wine. Plenty of choice on all three courses. I had fish soup and veal in a Roquefort sauce both absolutely lovely. The wine was rather dry for our taste, but just a touch of ‘Gaseosa’ improved it immensely, and made it perfectly drinkable. All nine in our party enjoyed the meal. Only three of our party speak Spanish, but the staff were very pleasant, patient and tolerant with the ‘brits abroad’. I’ve had meals at five times the price that I’ve enjoyed less I have no hesitation in giving El Picaro five stars, and look forward to going back when we visit Benavente in the future."
